What is Medical Cannabis?

Medical Cannabis (Medical Marijuana or Medical Marihuana) refers to the use of the Cannabis plant and/or its constituent Cannabinoids for use as medical therapy, to help treat disease, or in relief of medical symptoms. It has been recorded that the Cannabis plant has a history of medical use dating back thousands of years across many cultures.

Today we know that it is the unique Cannabinoid compounds found in Cannabis that provide the medicinal benefits of the plant.

How Do I access Medical Cannabis in Canada?

The following steps outline the process to obtain cannabis for medical purposes from a licensed producer under the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR).

To register with a licensed producer under the ACMPR, you need to follow the following steps:

Step 1: Consult with a Health Care Practitioner

Step 2: Obtain a Medical Document completed by your Health Care Practitioner

Step 3: Register and Order with a Licensed Producer

Step 4: Delivery of your Cannabis for Medical Purposes

Is Medical Cannabis Safe?

Medical cannabis has been authorized for sale in Canada for more than a decade and has been accessed by thousands of patients to treat a panoply of conditions and symptoms. It is best to consult with your doctor to find out whether medical cannabis may be appropriate for you.

Our products adhere to strict quality control standards and are tested for any possible contaminants. Before any product can be approved for sale it undergoes testing to determine accurate levels of cannabinoids. All of our products are assigned lot numbers, which allows us to recall our product and inform any affected clients quickly in the very unlikely event of a problem. Patient safety is top priority at Delta 9.

What is the proper dosage for me?

Studies suggest that an average dose of 0.5 – 3 grams/ day of dried cannabis when vaporized or smoked can provide effective relief of symptoms, however some patients, often those who chose an oral method of ingestion in conjunction to vaporizing or smoking have obtained larger prescriptions.

We recommend that those who have no prior experience with cannabis and cannabis therapy use a low starting dose and increase gradually if desired. Delta 9 is committed to working with patients and their Health Care practitioners to determine the proper dosage.

How much will my medicine cost?

Cost varies based on the strain and quantity purchased. Varieties are priced by gram and range between $5/ gram and $10/ gram based on the cost of production.

Here at Delta 9 providing compassionate care and service for Canadians of all walks of life is a priority. Delta 9 has a newly revamped Compassionate Pricing Program (CPP) which will help subsidize the cost of medicine for eligible clients with low incomes. Under this program, registered patients will be able to access CPP eligible strain(s) at the low price of only $5.75 per gram. For more information on the terms and conditions of our Compassionate Pricing Program please click here.

How much product can I order?

A registered patient can order a 30 day supply or 150 grams at a time, whichever is the lesser, depending on your Health Care practitioner's written order.

If your prescription is for more than 150 grams per month, we can ship multiple times a month to ensure that you have a consistent supply.

Is my medicine covered by my medical plan?

At this time most medical plans will not cover medical cannabis costs. If you are a veteran, you may have coverage through Veterans Affairs Canada. Medicinal Cannabis is regulated under the Narcotic Control Regulations and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act but it does not have a Drug Identification Number (DIN) which is required for provincial and third-party formularies (medical plans). Consult with a tax professional to find out how your Medical cannabis expenses can be claimed on your income tax return under the Medical Tax Credit.
